The Miami Dolphins signed free agent linebacker Rey Maualuga this afternoon to help fill-in the hole left after Raekwon McMillan’s ACL tear. The rookie McMillan is lost for the season.
The move comes after a workout on Wednesday where Maualuga seemingly left Miami without a deal and headed home to Cincinnati.
Maybe the Gase playing coy move and letting the player contemplate his future is working as it did with Cutler a couple of weeks prior.
Did Maualuga’s wife convince him to join Miami like Jay Cutler did?
In all seriousness, Maualuga is still a fairly decent replacement of McMillan who slides into a leadership role-calling plays and a familiarity with coach Burke’s defense from his Bengal days.
On the plus side the Dolphins become a bit more stronger at stopping the run with Maualuga at the helm of the defense.
On the downside, the Dolphins are reaching here since Maualuga is about 5 years from his prime and last year amassed a paltry 27 tackles playing less snaps.
If there was an award for fixing the Dolphins by replacing injured players, they’d win it.
Surely losing Ryan Tannehill, McMillan and now Lippett have added to that mix of absolute negativity, but in reality how could they do better?
If the Dolphins compete and win games early, look to the magic orchestrated-with smoke and mirrors by Chris Grier, Mike Tannenbaum, and the whole plan launched by head coach Adam Gase.
